Itex – Rotary Walk 2011 to Support Teenage Cancer Trust Guernsey
The 14th annual Itex – Rotary Around the Island Walk Guernsey will take place on the 4th June this year and one charity in particular is hoping it will top the previous fundraising records generated by hundreds of hardy Walkers.
Teenage Cancer Trust is devoted to improving the lives of teenagers and young adults suffering with cancer. Young people diagnosed with cancer need to be treated by individuals who are experts in dealing with teenagers. Teenage Cancer Trust works towards providing patients with the facilities they need to recover, in an environment suitable for their needs. Every day six young people from across the UK between the ages of 13 and 24 are diagnosed with cancer. Usually placed on a children’s ward or with elderly patients, young people often feel extremely isolated when facing a cancer diagnosis. Teenage Cancer Trust units are designed to be as close as possible to a young person’s normal life outside hospital. The state-of-the-art units are bright and vibrant and will often include pool tables, jukeboxes, computers and webcams, helping them keep in touch with others and cope with gruelling treatment and often long stays in hospital.
The money raised for Teenage Cancer Trust Guernsey will go towards funding and equipping a unit within Southampton General Hospital, where young patients will be able to stay together in a place where they can be comfortable and happy.
Helen Haynes, of Teenage Cancer Trust says, “We are thrilled to have the support from the Itex-Rotary Walk this year. Money raised from this special event will have an enormous impact on the lives of young people with cancer in Guernsey. We aim to provide these patients with as much as we can to make their recovery as easy as possible, so to have a donation from such a big charity event as the Itex – Rotary Walk means we have the potential to really help. We would like to thank The Itex-Rotary Walk for this support and residents of Guernsey for their donations.”
In 2010, 487 people took part in the walk with 432 completing the whole 40 miles, covering a total of 21,635 miles and raising over £48,000 with this being shared between 6 charities. Over the past 13 years the Itex-Rotary Walk has raised over £400,000 and with ‘Community’ being the theme of this year’s walk, 2011 is set to be bigger and better than ever before.
Richard Parker, Chairman of the Itex-Rotary Trust said, “We are really excited for this year’s Around the Island Walk and hope that it will be the best walk ever. We are very pleased to be able to help support worthy causes such as Teenage Cancer Trust Guernsey and work with them to provide young people suffering from cancer with the necessary facilities for them. The walk raises more and more money each year, so this year we are hoping it will be bigger and better.”
